Member Spotlight May 2020: Ryan Mobberley

Ryan Mobberley is in our Athlete Spotlight this month! Please read below for his bio.

I’ve pretty much been a golfer my whole life. My dad introduced me to the game when I was 12 years old, in Nanaimo, B.C.  I became a more serious golfer at age 15 and have played golf every summer at Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club in Headingly, Manitoba. I grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I’m an X-ray Technologist by trade and work in the Selkirk hospital. I am married to Taylor Hallenbeck (who also has hearing loss). In my spare time I enjoy cheering for the Winnipeg Jets and the Blue Bombers. I also enjoy fishing, skiing and playing board games with friends.

The 2006 World Deaf Golf Championship was held in Edmonton; my dad saw an article in the local newspaper about the tournament and told me.  Based on his information, I investigated further and found out about the Canadian Deaf Golf Championship – the tournament used to qualify to represent Canada at the World Deaf Golf Championship. I played my first Canadian Deaf Golf Championship in 2007 in Mount Tremblant, Quebec finishing 3^rd overall and earning a spot on the Canadian team. My first World Deaf Golf Championship was in 2008 in Perth, Australia. Since then I have represented Canada in three other World Deaf Golf Championships: St. Andrews, Scotland (2010), Traverse City, Michigan (2014), and Dublin, Ireland (2018). Over the years I have won the Canadian Deaf Golf Championship three times. My first win was at Bel Acres Golf and Country Club just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba (2013). The second win was at River’s Edge Golf Club just outside Calgary, Alberta (2015). My most recent win was at Mayfair Lakes Golf and Country Club near Vancouver, BC (2019).
